Octane Flyer made the perfect start to his racing career when the two-year-old proved a class above his opposition in the Jye Cooper Group Handicap (1010m) at Doomben.
Trainer Kelly Schweida paid $100,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale but the Statue Of Liberty was quick to repay a slice of the stable’s investment with his brilliant debut win.
Ric McMahon took the ride on Octane Flyer, which had not trialled publicly before his maiden appearance at Doomben.
A strong early gallop prompted McMahon to take a sit behind the leaders on Octane Flyer, guiding the inexperienced youngster into a position with cover behind the front-runners for the first 600 metres.
McMahon took Octane Flyer into clear running at the 300 metres before the son of Statue Of Liberty sprinted impressively to put the race beyond doubt with 50 metres to travel.
Octane Flyer went to the line 1-3/4 lengths clear of his nearest rival to earn a $32,000 winner’s cheque for his efforts.
Octane Flyer lived up to his impressive pedigree with his debut win. The colt’s sire Statue Of Liberty is the sire of star sprinter Hay List while the maternal side of Octane Flyer’s pedigree is extremely strong.
Octane Flyer dam Tahnee Tango is a stakes-placed daughter of Grand Lodge, which hails from the same family as Group 1-winning stars Singing The Blues, Shogun Lodge and Referral.
