Quality colt Octane Flyer relished his first start on slow ground to post a decisive victory in the Gallipoli Medical Research Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm.
Octane Flyer had his first four starts for a win and three minor placings on dead and good tracks, including a fighting second in the Group 3 Skyline Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm in March.
The son of Statue Of Liberty youngster finished second at his last outing, three weeks before Octane Flyer stepped out on rain-affected ground at Eagle Farm.
Ric McMahon stuck with the impressive two-year-old for his $50,000 assignment with the smart speed of the race leaving the pair in the second half of the field until approaching the home turn.
McMahon initially had trouble getting Octane Flyer clear early in the straight before he eased the powerful juvenile into clear running at the 200 metres.
Octane Flyer showed his quality when he knuckled down to his task late in the race to over-run the front-runners close to the post to score by three-quarters of a length.
The colt’s latest victory took his earnings past the $100,000 Kelly Schweida paid for the athletic type at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
